Una de estas mujeres en la historia de México es la Señora Doña María Josefa Crescencia Ortiz y Girón. Llamada cariñosamente como la «Corregidora», era la mujer del Don Miguel Domínguez, el Corregidor de la Ciudad de Querétaro.

Antes de tener la oportunidad de tener memoria, la Corregidora perdió sui padre en una batalla. Su madre también murió más tarde. Con la muerte de sus padres, su tía la crio y logró de mandarla en el Colegio de las Vizcaínas, un de los colegios más prestigiosas para en este tiempo. Allí, conoció el Don Miguel, que será su marido más tarde. En 1802, su marido fue nombrado el Corregidor de Querétaro y pos eso ella se convirtió la corregidora.

Con esto, tuvo la oportunidad para ayudar los más marginalizados en la sociedad. Tuvo una predilección a los indios, criollos y mestizos. Y con su poder, trato de cambiar el sistema. Creyó que cada mexicano es igual y tienen los mismos derechos. Para ayudarle, ayudó en organizar clases secretas para instruir a ellos leer y escribir. Más tarde convenció a su marido para apoyar su causa.

Sin duda, hizo tanto para mejorar la vida de los mexicanos en general que el Emperador Agustín de Iturbide la ofreció muchos honores. Pero como pensó que solo hace el papel de un patriota, no aceptó nada de ellos.

Después de su muerte, el gobierno mexicano dedicó una plaza para que los mexicanos siempre recuerden la grandeza de esta mujer. Hoy, se encuentra la Plaza de la Corregidora en el centro histórico de Querétaro.
